The Main Idea
It’s a gift when someone tells you something that you subconsciously know, but you feel like you’re having a revelation. That’s exactly what Mark Manson delivers in The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck. He encourages us all to reevaluate our values, doubt our instincts and start caring about things that actually matter.
This book spoke to me in a HALLELUJAH, PREACH MARK, YAAAS, HELL YEAH type of way. Instead of giving you a detailed review, explaining all of the ways Manson’s psychological method is incredible, I’m simply going to offer my most memorable quotes. It was insurmountable to narrow this list down to a round number, so we are going to go with the TOP 13 QUOTES. I just want to shove the book onto your lap so you can find the rest of them on your own.
TOP 13 QUOTES
*in no particular order*
“This is the most simple and basic component of life: our struggles determine our successes.”
“Maturity is what happens when one learns to only give a fuck about what’s truly fuckworthy.”
“The greatest truths in life are usually the more unpleasant to hear.”
And this is what’s so dangerous about a society that coddles itself more and more from the inevitable discomforts of life: we lose the benefits of experiencing healthy doses of pain, a loss that disconnects us from the reality of the world around us.
“Being wrong opens us up to the possibility of change.”
“All of this “every person can be extraordinary and achieve greatness” stuff is basically just jerking off your ego. It’s a message that tastes good going down, but in reality is nothing more than empty calories that make you emotionally fat and bloated, the proverbial Big Mac for your heart and brain.”
“The more we choose to accept responsibility in our lives, the more power we will exercise over our lives.”
“The man who believes he knows everything learns nothing.”
“Many people may be to blame for your unhappiness, but nobody is ever responsible for your unhappiness but you. This is because you always get to choose how you see things, how you react to things, how you value things. You always get to choose the metric by which to measure your experiences.”
“Certainty is the enemy of growth.”
“That’s simple reality: if it feels like it’s you versus the world, chances are it’s really just you verses yourself.”
“For many of us, our proudest achievements come in the face of the greatest adversity. Our pain often makes us stronger, more resilient and grounded.”
“Not giving a fuck does not mean being indifferent; it means being comfortable with being different.”
Conclusively, you need to read this book. Your mom needs to read this book. Your boss needs to read this book. The Pope needs to read this book. I’m gifting it to everyone I know this upcoming holiday season. READ THIS BOOK!!!
