First published in the UK in 2017 and wildly revered with over two million copies sold, This is Going to Hurt is finally available across the United States. As a winner of a record four National Book Awards, Adam Kay brings readers a first hand take as a doctor in the NHS (publicly funded healthcare system of the UK). This is Going to Hurt is written in diary form with various educating footnotes and downright hysterical anecdotes throughout.
“In 2010, after six years of training and a further six years slugging it out on the hospital wards, I quit my job as a doctor. My parents still haven’t forgiven me” (Introduction 1).
Even without ever considering a profession in the medical field, this book is highly entertaining. I will admit to dabbling in Grey’s Anatomy, with a slight interest in the complexity of surgical procedures, but that is as far is it goes for me. Still, I would recommend this book to anyone. Well, maybe not pregnant women, unless you’re genuinely curious about every single thing that could go wrong.
“Hilarious and heartbreaking… I howled, yelped, and occasionally choked with laughter… This book may hurt, but in an important and necessary way.” —The Times
“Painfully funny. The pain and the funniness somehow add up to something entirely good, entirely noble, and entirely lovable.” —Stephen Fry
“Darkly funny… heartbreaking.” —The New Yorker
“This book is heartbreaking, hilarious and truly important. I believe in its humanity, its spirit and its conscience. The best doctor’s visit you will ever have.” —Rose McGowan
