Since my boyfriend & I both went to college in Rhode Island, and lived in the Newport area, we had been itching to go back. We already have favorite restaurants, bars & nature spots, so we knew exactly where to go.
If you’re considering visiting the Newport, RI area, you’re sure to find some tourist tips here!
After sitting through loads of traffic, we made it to Newport! We booked an Airbnb for this trip; we were pretty apprehensive about it, we’ve never used Airbnb before. I know, shocker.
But the place looked cute & cozy & had great reviews. Not to mention, it was WAY cheaper than any hotel in the area. We parked, entered the key code, and VOILA we were all set for the weekend. The place was ADORABLE and seconds from downtown. We didn’t have to use the car a single time during our trip.
Something I didn’t realize I would love about our Airbnb apartment is the fact that there’s a kitchen! We stocked up on snacks & drinks, which probably saved us a pretty penny. Furthermore, look at this adorable sign that the owner drew for us! What an adorable, personal touch.
BONUS: The Airbnbs that are ‘dog friendly’ are much more prevalent than hotels. Huge bonus for fur-parents.
Anyway, we settled in, had a couple of cocktails at ‘home’, & ventured the 10 feet into town for dinner. On this particular night, we chose to eat at The Red Parrot, one of our favorite spots from our college days.
Up & at em!
I was bound and determined to get out and do things during our trip. No sleeping the morning away!
We ventured over to the Cliff Walk, a regular occurrence when we lived in the area. The Cliff Walk is a 3.5 mile path between the beautiful ocean & Newport’s famous mansions. The ocean glistens & appears endless. The mansions are a mix of architectural feats, historic charm & pure wealth.
Next, my favorite non-touristy nature walk: The Purgatory Chasm. It’s a short path that leads you to a beautiful expanse of the ocean. Similar to the Cliff Walk, but much less known. If you travel a little further, you will find a giant rock formation naturally split down the middle from centuries of running water; hence, the chasm.
I’m pretty sure Daisy is asking, “is this heaven?” or perhaps singing the Celine Dion/Titantic song in her head.
Next on the docket: LUNCH! On this particular New England day, it was unusually warm. While it should be 65 degrees on a typical October day, it was 80 DEGREES! Indian Summer much?! So naturally, we picked a place that we could eat outside & soak up the sun.
Tourist tip: the place to be in Newport on a beautiful day is The Black Pearl. It’s on the water with cheap, strong cocktails and real-deal New England seafood. Pictured is my yummy peach sangria.
Wouldn’t be vacation without some day drinking!
Anyone else LOVE shopping tipsy? I know I do. It doesn’t always result with the smartest decisions, but it’s always a good time. Ironically, I did NOT regret this purchase at all. Check out this murder mystery series! The setting? The Newport mansions, how appropriate.
Those cover illustrations are GORGEOUS! Also, what better time for a thrilling mystery than October?
We explored. We ate. We shopped. Time to relax. Back to the adorable Airbnb to kick our feet up and relish in the spirit of a mini-vacation.
It wouldn’t be a true Rhode Island experience without some Del’s Lemonade. Del’s is a RI staple; it’s bottled in convenient stores, frozen at the beach & mixed with beer at BBQ’s.
Side note: my favorite type of vodka is blueberry Triple 8. It’s a product of Cisqo Brewery in Nantucket, Massachusetts. Other than Nantucket, the ONLY place I’ve been able to find it is in Rhode Island liquor stores. So I went ahead and mixed Del’s Lemonade with Triple 8 vodka.
Result: PURE BLISS
On this joyous Saturday evening, we chose to eat at our FAVORITE NEWPORT RESTAURANT: Diegos. We didn’t get a table outside, but that didn’t stop us from enjoying a nostalgic pitcher of margaritas & fish tacos.
We had officially been drinking for eight hours straight and decided to head home, cuddle our pup & throw on some Netflix for the remainder of the evening. We sure aren’t in college anymore!
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 22
Nothing better than sleeping in on a Sunday! We lazed the morning away, walked Daisy & got some much needed Starbucks. After packing up, we drove home & enjoyed the rest of our Sunday doing a bit of chores & watching the Patriots beat Atlanta.
P.S. This is what a TUCKERED OUT Pomeranian looks like:
I couldn’t have asked for a better balance of fun & relaxation on this weekend getaway.
Where are some of your favorite getaway spots? Have you been on a fun vacation or mini-vacation lately? If not, be sure to keep Rhode Island on your radar!
