Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Now, facing pressure from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what’s right.
Starr narrates the movie through voice overs, often with direct quotes from the book. The movie barely ever strays from the main scenes and points of the novel.
Obviously, the book includes more details which show Starr’s mindset and that of her family and friends. Despite this, the most important aspects of the novel are depicted beautifully.
The main parts that are different include:
- The setting where Starr tells her father she has a white boyfriend;
- The amount of time Starr spends at her Uncle’s house is much greater in the book; and
- The physical distance between Garden Hieghts and Williamson is not shown well in the movie
The music in the movie is AMAZING!!! Below is the soundtrack:
1. Pusha T “Hold On”
2. Kendrick Lamar “DNA”
3. Jadakiss “Hold You Down”
4. Tupac “Only God Can Judge Me”
5. Arlissa “We Won’t Move”
